Intonation and Word Order
The interpretation of sentences depends on word order and intonation. Intonation and word order may, for instance, indicate which part of an assertation is the new or important information, which question a sentence answers, or whether there is a contrast to other expressions in the context. Moreover, there are complex interaction patterns between word order and intonation: Not every constituent of a sentence may be focused, not every word order is compatible with every intonation pattern. Also, the context as well as the speaker’s intentions affect word order and intonation. The aim of the summer school is to introduce participants to the basics of theoretical and empirical work on intonation and word order, but also discover recent approaches and research tendencies in the area. The summer school is supposed to form the foundations for the participants’ own successful research (MA or PhD thesis) on the topic. All courses and talks will be given in English language by renowned international experts. In total, there will be four courses, each taught daily for the whole week: three courses on intonation and/or word order, one course on useful research methods concerning the topic.

- Participation fee: 50 € for participants affiliated with the University of Graz, 100 € for participants from other universities
- Application period: May 15 – June 30, 2018
The summer school mainly addresses MA students and PhD students from all universities and is limited to 25 participants. There is a limited amount of scholarships for academically extraordinary applications (only for applicants outside of Graz University). Please contact the organizers for more details.
